This one is for all you bloggers or all you who intend to open a blog. If you have read Dev102 you probably saw that a couple of months back a lot of theme tweaks, moving stuff from here to there. I promised back then that I will tell you why we did that, so here goes.
We wanted to increase our number of page views. Back then we had about 1.20 page views per visit and we wanted to try and make that number grow. The changes to our theme were all test to see what will make people (you) stay and continue reading more posts and articles. We tried a lot of things but they were mainly two ways we tried to increase our page views, so here they come with their results.
Hi all
July is over and it is time for the stats.
Exciting news! We got accepted to DMOZ! which is great. It seems that bugging them all those months finally paid out
As expected the numbers are lower than last month’s (no more 20k visits a day…) but still show progress. On the other hand Our efforts In the blogging Idol have taken us to almost 600 RSS subscribers! So thanks to everyone who subscribed!
As promised, We have raised our offer for article writing, we will now pay 30$ for a well written, 500+ words article. Find out more on our Make money with Dev102 page.
We have also Proud to announce the opening of the Dev102 Link Directory. If you have a blog or a WebSite and you want to swap links with us feel free to add you link there. If you can find a category that fits your WebSite contact us. We will not instantly approve all blogs, but if your blog is updated frequently and is not spam you will definitely get in.
Here is a short tutorial about how to track Any Link Click with Google Analytics.
The first thing you will have to do is add a short snippet of code to the link you want to track. The code snippet you are adding is actually an OnClick JavaScript event handler that will be executed when the link is clicked and make Google Analytics take note of it. What you have to add is this the following:
Today, in many applications there is a need to know and use HTML. And if you are a Web applications programmer you probably should know HTML :).
The question is do you know all the HTML tags? Do you know exactly how they work and what each tag does? And the most important of all, how each tag acts in each browser?
There are hundreds of books, articles, WebSites, posts, blogs and manuals that claim to "teach" you HTML. I on the other hand think that there is no experience like hands on experience so I wanted to introduce you to HTML Playground . This is one of my favorites sites for HTML.
Another month has come to an end and an interesting month it was!
The high light of the month was getting one of our articles on the front page of stumbleupon which drove almost 30000 visitors to dev102!!! That article was not a programming article but in fact a humorous one about company logos. That definitely gave a boost to our Page Views and Visits Stats but damaged the Page Views/Visits, Bounce Rate and Time on page. During that time dev102 crashed several times so we decided to install the WP-SuperCache plugin which removes allot of load from the server.
Read more about caching you WebSite here.
We are also taking part in the blogging Idol contest Arraigned by Daniel from DailyBlogTips
The winner of the contest is the one who manages to add as many Subscribers as possible to his RSS feed over one month.
So get your friends in and help us Win it!
I used to love using Digg, reading, submitting and digging. But no more! From now on I HATE them. I know Hate is a strong word, but hear me out and understand why I used this strong word.
On Friday the 13th of June I tried to submit one of my articles to Digg and I got the following error message:
This URL has been widely reported by users as being regularly used to spam Digg’s submission process and cannot be submitted at this time.
Weird I though to my self, probably just a glitch and right away I wrote an E-Mail to the Digg Support, here it is:
Here are two interesting tools I found while working on our Silveredo 2 theme.
This one is quite helpful and a must if you are working and building themes. Usually you want your theme to be compatible with FF2/3 and IE7 which we all know has its issues…
I bet there are many people who want their site to be compatible with Internet Explorer 6 too, having IE6 and IE7 working together on your windows is a problem, as it turns out, you CAN have all the Internet Explorer versions working along side each other, all you have to do is to download the multiple IE version installer and install any version you need.
Last evening we have experienced our first ever crash due to traffic, it was quite annoying, but I guess it is a good sign :). Our current hosting program supports 150 concurrent users (shared hosting). The article that caused the trouble was When a Company Logo Doesn’t Come Out So Good. We are using a WordPress plugin to track online activity in the site called Wassup, which we recommend and here is the traffic graph of just before the crash:
May is gone and now is the time to check out the stats. I am so happy to see that we have managed to make all parameters grow substantially, although i must say it is getting harder and harder.
We have tweaked our theme several times this month due too some test we were running, the conclusion of those test will be published in the following week.
Just before the stats we would like to announce that from now on we will be accepting guest posts.
Hi all
As you might have noticed we have just tweaked our theme again. During the past month we made some theme changes and tests, but now we think we finally got something we like!. We are sure that the new design will makes Dev102 much more “Easy on the eyes” :).
Hope you all like it as much as [...]
